For as Many as Will $19.54 Originally released in 1978, For As Many As Will was the last recorded collaboration between Shirley Collins and her sister Dolly, who died in 1999. And, rightly, it was a very personal affair, covering far more than the traditional folk music that had been their trademark. The pair do ample justice to Richard Thompson’s sad “Never Again” — the first modern song they’d recorded — before launching into “Beggar’s Opera Medley,” with songs from John Gay’s seminal English opera. It’s not what most fans would have expected, but it’s right. Even the sound of Dolly using a modern instrument — a synthesizer — though it might have been shocking, suited the music perfectly. For the final “Harvest Home Medley,” a selection of songs from the Goby gypsy family, the mood reverts to the medieval, Collins’ voice backed simply by flute organ and recorder. On “German Tune,” the ensemble offers exactly that — a 14th century German Christmas carol, quite possibly the first recorded Collins tune to venture outside the British Isles. Of course, Collins doesn’t completely neglect her beloved traditional music, with favorites like “The Blacksmith Courted Me,” “Gilderoy,” and “Lord Allenwater” to round out the set. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi

Many Colored Kite $15.18 Mark Olson’s first proper solo album, 2007′s The Salvation Blues, was written and recorded in the wake of a powerfully traumatic romantic breakup, and as beautiful as it often was, the pain that inspired it was never far from the surface. Following a collaboration with his former partner in the Jayhawks, Gary Louris (2008′s Ready for the Flood), Many Colored Kite finds Olson making music on his own again, and though these songs appear to be the work of a stronger and happier man, this remains a deeply introspective set of songs, with a keenly spiritual undertow running through these meditations on love, nature, and humanity. Beau Raymond produced these recordings, and the sound is simple and uncluttered, dominated by acoustic guitars and Olson’s voice, and even when the album gingerly dips its toes into rock & roll, the music maintains a steady hand and a touch that’s careful not to lean too hard on the tunes. Olson’s vocals remain clear and impassioned, but there’s a wary fragility in his voice that sets these performances apart from his early work, and the melodic twists and turns of “Morning Dove,” “More Hours,” and “Kingsnake” are ambitious and challenging, a clear departure from the sunnier mood of his work with the Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers and the lovely Midwestern plains of the Jayhawks. And as Olson emphatically declares “Praise the love, praise the light of the day” in “Morning Dove” or “There’s a light that shines, there are dreams untold” in “No Time to Live Without Her,” the lyrics carry a palpable subtext that Olson is seeking solace in divine love as well as more earthly comforts. So Many Roads $12.79 So Many Roads is Hammond’s most notable mid-’60s Vanguard album, due not so much to Hammond’s own singing and playing (though he’s up to the task) as the yet-to-be-famous backing musicians. Three future members of the Band — Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, and Levon Helm — are among the supporting cast, along with Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica, and Mike Bloomfield also contributes. It’s one of the first fully realized blues-rock albums, although it’s not in the same league as the best efforts of the era by the likes of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band or John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. In part that’s because the repertoire is so heavy on familiar Chicago blues classics by the likes of Willie Dixon, Bo Diddley, and Muddy Waters; in part that’s because the interpretations are so reverent and close to the originals in arrangement; and in part it’s also because Hammond’s blues vocals were only okay. Revisionist critics thus tend to downgrade the record a notch.
